This year the Annual BR cup colours will be held on Wednesday 23rd November at 7.30pm in Terryland under flood lights. This match organised by James O'Toole each year will be doubled up with the CUFL game. All proceeds from this highly competitive game will go to COPE (www.cope.ie). COPE is a Galway charity which provides emergency accommodation for people who are homeless in Galway City. GMIT will be looking to retain the cup and with NUIG been local rivals this should be a highly contested game at the highest level of college football. All support is welcome.

GMIT played Carlow on a grey afternoon on East United’s pitch with the two teams having enjoyed different fortunes in the League up to this point.  On paper it looked like an easy day at the office for Carlow, however football is never played on paper.

Carlow kicked off and looked their usual composed self, happy to pass the ball amongst themselves and probe for the opener.  John Clarke’s men set their tone early in the match and pressed for every ball, determined not to allow Carlow any time on the ball to pick out that killer pass.  As a result the first twenty minutes saw Carlow enjoy lots of possession but not in an area of the pitch that could do any damage.  It was GMIT who almost took a surprise lead when a long ball up field saw Carlow’s keeper deceived by the bounce and Dravins’ cross/shot narrowly miss either a touch or the far post. GMIT kept a high line and with the defenders all in synch they were successfully employing an offside trap which caused much frustration to Carlow’s forward line.

Eventually Carlow did get the upper hand.  After a rare attack down the right wing a superb cross was met with a thumping header by Tom Elms to put Carlow one up.  GMIT were a little rattled by this and struggled to get back into their rhythm.  Carlow capitalised on this and further extended their lead through another by Elms and one by Ryan.  However if we have learned one thing from GMIT’s previous performances it is that they never give up.  Having already come back from a 4 goal deficit against NUIG they set the foundation for another come back when Tom King bagged a goal just on the stroke of half time.

That goal did wonders for GMIT’s spirits and they came back onto the pitch in the second half with a renewed vigour.  Both teams showed great passing ability and a great determination to get the ball down and play it on the ground.  It was a neat passing move from GMIT in midfield that sprung Tom King clear to reduce the deficit to one goal.  Carlow then sprung back into life and Elms was denied an equaliser by an outstanding stop by John O’Connor in GMIT’s goal.  Elms would not be denied his hat trick for much longer though and he bravely poked the ball home from a goal mouth scramble following a Carlow IT corner.  GMIT tried right until the final whistle to pull the game back level but found any more chances hard to come by against a well organised Carlow side.

  • The 2010/2011 CUFL Premier Division West kicked off with an astonishing match between local rivals NUI Galway and GMIT. In fact a more entertaining game is not likely to be seen for the remainder of the season. However while it was enthralling stuff for the spectators it was an afternoon to forget most of the defenders on show.

GMIT were very slow to get off the mark and found themselves 4-0 down near half time with Enda Dunne, Darragh Ashmore, Rory O'Keefe and Kevin Curry were on target to provide NUI with what looked like an insurmountable lead. GMIT keeper John O'Connor was clearly shell shocked at what was happening and was no doubt worried about how often he would end up picking the ball out of his net. While this was a start that GMIT will not want to remember for the remainder of the season the team spirit and never say die attitude demonstrated by John Clarke's men after going 4-0 down was remarkable. Heads did not drop and amazingly they managed to pick themselves up to draw level at 4-4. Peter Dravins, Tom King and Enda McGahon on the mark to tie the game. NUI may feel like they took their foot off the gas however full credit must go to the attitude displayed by GMIT. With the game tied at 4-4 the last half hour finally saw the defence of both sides com into the game.

It was a different type of match now as both teams sparred back and forth with neither looking like they were going to find that illusive winner. Eventually with 18 minutes left NUI found the back of the net again and then looked to shut up shop. However with 12 minutes to go they conceded a free 20 yards from goal. With the wall set up the ball was struck low across the body of the keeper and arrowed into the bottom corner to make it 5-5. A draw looked like an inevitable outcome in this amazing contest until with just 2 minutes remaining NUI scrambled the ball over the line and this time they successfully kept out GMIT despite some intense pressure late on.

A final score of 6-5 and lots of positives and negatives to take from this tie for both teams. Both defences will have to improve for the season ahead but both attacks (particularly Tom King for GMIT who scored an opening day hat trick) looked very dangerous. Plenty of food for thought.

  • GMIT Ladies Team Update

GMIT Ladies have endured a tough start to life in the Regional South West Women’s League.  Having not been active in the previous season’s League it was always going to be a tough re-introduction into competitive action.  However under the guidance of new manager Sinead McCormack they certainly have shown that they have the appetite for the challenge.  After just one training session as a team they travelled to Sligo and put in a very credible performance, only loosing out 5-3 in the end to a much fancied Sligo B team.  In their second game at home to Cork B hopes were high that they would get their first points on the board but they found themselves 2-0 down at half time after a disjointed first half performance.  The team came out for the second half of this game with all guns blazing and were unlucky in the end not to get anything form this game after dominating much of the second half.  The team also represented GMIT in the Futsal Regional finals in Sligo, however after been drawn in a group with powerhouses Athlone and home team Sligo it proved to be too much to soon
