    The CIT Astro League

Semester 2 saw the second of the CIT Astro Leagues take place. 13 teams, including 90 people participated and battled it out for the coveted trophy and the much sought after prize money. The teams played three times a week in 30 minute matches during lunch time throughout February and March. The top four would enter a semi-final and final play-off to decide the winner.

    CFAI

Having won the Semester 1 CIT Astro League, M.M.M. FC entered this competition as firm favourites. But after a slow start and some disappointing results they would never recover, eventually finishing in 5th and missing out on a play-off spot. From an early stage in the league "Fat Penguins" emerged as favourites after some great results. "Six Chicks" also looked strong at this stage.

    Astro League

After 12 games played, an entertaining and tight league unfolded with only 3 points seperated the 4th and 7th team. The four teams that grabbed the all important 4 places were; Team Discovery Channel, the outsiders Barceloners, Six Chicks and the favourites Fat Penguins.

    Astro league

Semi-Finals - Six Chicks took on the Barceloners and Team Discovery Channel played Fat Penguins. In the first semi-final the favourites Six Chicks were in for a shock. A strong start from the Barceloners gave them a 2-0 lead, they then defended in numbers to shut out the opposition and claim a place in the final. The second semi-final was more straight forward, unsurprisingly Fat Penguins took a 2 goal lead, Team Discovery Channel did reply but Fat Penguins saw out the game.

    Astro League

Onlookers expected the final to be a straight forward win for Fat Penguins but Barceloners would have their say. A nervy start from the Fat Pengiuns gave the Barceloners a chance and they grabbed it with both hands. The Barceloners took the game by the scruff of the neck taking an early lead. They didn't look back from here, adding a second to win the final 2-0.

    CIT Apprentice Astro League:

Throughout February and March the CIT Apprentice Astro League took place. Eight teams including 64 players players participated in this fantastic competition. Each team played each other once in 30 minute matches, with each team having an eye on the prize money that was up for grabs. The top four would qualify for the semi-finals.

    Apprentice Astro League

It wasn't long before the Barcelectricians became the most feared side comfortably brushing aside their opponents in the opening matches. But the likes of the Live Wires, Bog Monsters, Car-Painters and Schmutzdeske all had enough quality to challange for top spot.

    Apprentice Astro League

The semi-finals saw the Bog-Monsters take on the Live Wires and Bacelectricians take on the Car-Painters. Surprisingly the Bog-Monsters progressed even though they had finished 4th in the league, but having been consistant all the way, it was no surprise to see that they would have to face Barcelectricians.

    Apprentice League

Barcelectricians entered the final as firm favourites but in a final with so much at stake and the pressure involved anything can happen. It was the Bog-Monsters who adapted quicker and took the game to Barcelectricians. A tense and nervy final unfolded looking like 1 goal would be the difference and eventually it was the Bog-Monsters who took the lead on 22 minutes with a superb strike from a difficult angle. The game looked all but over as neither side gave the other any space in this tight affair. But in the dying moments an attack came from Barcelectricians, a ball crossed in was met by the toe of the striker and somehow after a very lucky bounce trickled into the net. Sudden death penalties awaited. Anybodies game now, each team scored 3 pens before the Bog-Monsters agonisingly missed. Up stepped a Barcelectricians and the prize was finally theirs.

    Apprentice Futsal Tournament in CIT

CIT's Apprentice Students were given an introduction to Futsal throughout January and February in what turned out to be a fantastic competitive competition. 10 teams consisting of 70 players competed over the 6 weeks. 2 groups of 5 teams played each other once and the top 2 played off in the Final.

    Apprentice Futsal

6E Warriors and Denny Ham were the two teams who got to grips with the fast pace and skills of Futsal. Both teams managed to go through their respective groups unbeaten to set up a much anticipated final. Denny Ham entered the final as favourites, their free flowing football and their ability to score goals caught the eye of onlookers, but 6E Warriors were yet to have their say.

    Apprentice Futsal

The final got off to a slow start, both teams very cagey and wary of giving a way an early goal. 6E Warriors came with a specific game plan, shut off the opposition and hit them on the counter attack. Denny Ham played their usually way, passed and moved, showed good skills but the Warriors were devastating on the counter and just before half time they took the lead.

In such a tight game the first goal was always going to be crucial. Denny Ham came flying out of the traps for the second half, attack came after attack but the Warriors lived up to their name and battled hard to keep the lead. The two teams showed their quality and the reason why they were in the final throughout the game. With minutes to go 6E Warriors produced a sucker punch on a swift counter attack which ended with a sublime finish to become the first CIT Apprentice Futsal Champions and claimed the prizes.

UCC B had a slow start losing to UCC A but impressed by winning the other two matches and finished as highest scorers, they finished second. CIT Futsal Tournament

In preparation for the WSCAI Futsal Intervarsity’s CIT held a Futsal Tournament consisting of two teams from CIT and two teams from UCC.

The competition took place in CIT’s Sports Hall on January 13th. Matches lasted for 20 minutes and each team played each other once. Chris O’ Mahony took charge of the CIT teams while Bryan Phelan managed the UCC ladies.

Megan Spillane of CIT A proved to be the difference between these four well matched teams. Megan finished top scorer with an amazing 7 goals in 3 matches. Linda Douglas of UCC A pushed Megan all the way in the scoring charts but just fell short netting an impressive 5 goals.

The league was tight from the start and only goal difference separated the top two and the teams in 3rd and 4th. UCC B’s best moment came with a victory over their compatriots UCC A but still managed to finish fourth, level on goal difference with CIT B but scored less. CIT B looked confident at times but lacked the cutting edge needed. UCC A previously beat the league winners but could only grab second spot, and even with the fantastic form of Zoe Murphy and the goal scoring machine Linda Douglas still fell short. CIT A had a shaky start but from there they went from strength to strength and the form of Valerie Leahy ,the finishing pedigree of Megane Spillane and with a little help from an old foe UCC B, CIT A topped the table.

    CIT Astro League

    Ken Murphy

13th teams consisting of 95 students entered the CIT Astro League. The teams battled it out for the past 3 months, everyone played each other once and the top four entered a playoff. The competition to secure a top four place was immense and went all the way to the final day. The Island Boyz from the NMCI who held 2nd spot throughout the tournament suffered dramatically by being pipped on the final day, ending up finishish 6th. 'We Got No Jobs Except For Gav' had gone on a 6 match winning streak leading up to the final day, but with a loss at the hands of the impressive Bamsenal they finished 5th.

The top four consisted of Bamsenal, MMM F.C, Biscuits and The Super 6.

    Roy

The semi-finals were a heated affair as the four teams attempted to cease their opportunity and reach the final and secure the €100 prize money. Bamsenal who topped the league, led by the fantastic Mark Kearney just did enough to see off Biscuits, while MMM F.C who went from strenght to strenght througout the tournament brushed The Super Six aside.

The final saw two fanastic teams battle out a magnificient match. Bamsenal took the lead and looked to be in control with Mark Kearney and Roy pulling the strings. But then up stepped Ken Murphy with a thunderbolt to make it 1-1. It was all one way traffic from here with MMM F.C pressing. And it was again Ken Murphy who opened up the Bamsenal defense with a sublime bit of skill and cutback providing his teamate with the simple task of slotting home.

    Final score Bamsenal 1 MMM F.C 2.

Valerie Leahy named Evening Echo Sports Star of the Month

CIT ladies soccer captain Valerie Leahy created a bit of history by becoming the first ever ladies soccer player to win the Evening Echo sportstar of the month for October. In the three successful years that the award has been running there has never been a ladies soccer player awarded but CITs Leahy can now lay claim to being the first.

She has been an integral part of Cork side Lakewood Rangers who won the Cork Ladies Senior League this year and also beaten finalists in the FAI Womans Intermediate Cup losing 5-4 on penalties to a Donegal side.

She Captained the Cork Ladies side who won their first Munster Senior Ladies soccer title this year against Aisling Annacotty of Limerick. Leahy had a hand in all three goals in Corks 3-1 victory in the final scoring the second herself.

    Valerie Leahy

Valerie is also captain of the college Ladies team who are having a mixed season this year. the team started off brightly beating the guards 6-0 and in their second game were trailing 4-0 to NUIG with nine minutes remaining. Megan Spillane scored what seemed like a consolation goal for the college side but Valerie Leahy turned the game around for the college side scoring a fantastic hat trick in the remaining 7 mins of the game including a 25 yard free kick and earned CIT a vital point.

    WSCAI Futsal

This year's Futsal Tournament was held in Colasite Stiofain Naofa. Four teams, CORK IT, UCC, CCFE and Waterford IT, competed in the event. All four teams put on a great display which was appreciated by the many onlookers. The matches were fiercely contested and the girls played some fantastic football. The teams played each other twice and matches lasted 15 minutes. Although there was not much between the three Cork teams, UCC eventually triumphed and topped the group. CCFE pipped an unlucky CIT to grab the all important 2nd spot and a Waterford side who never went down without a fight finished in 4th spot. Best of luck to UCC and CCFE in the next round.
