Report CIT:
It is now the business end of the group stages and the quarter finals were now in sight for both these sides that had been in excellent form coming into this game. Waterford is a tough place to get a result and CIT would have been happy to come away with a point, but Waterford IT had other ideas knowing that a win would see them more or less qualify.
The home side came flying out of the traps and their direct approach caused many problems for the away side early on and within 5 minutes CIT failed to deal with a deep ball into the box and Darragh Walsh capitalised. The first half continued in this manner with Craig McGuire of Waterford IT causing the CIT central pair of Colum Nugent and John Forrest all kinds of problems. CIT only remained in the game due to a fantastic display from keeper Shane Murphy. CIT then began to get back into the game and eventually the pressure paid off from a set piece. A Brian Murphy corner found the head of Gavin Moore who finished with a fantastic effort. 1-1 half time.
The game was now in the balance but the home side were determined to get 3 points and within a couple of minutes of the restart, a slip from CIT’s Barry O’ Sullivan allowed John Frost to put the home side back in front with a superb finish. The CIT defence were now at sixes and sevens and Darragh Walsh doubled his tally soon after. Murphy then brought down McGuire who in turn finished from the spot before completing a brace after more defensive woes from CIT. CIT had their own chances throughout the half and had a fair share of possession but on the day it was Waterford IT who punished the visitors with a showcase of finishing.
A much deserved win for Waterford IT now sees them in the quarter finals. CIT will battle it out with UL in an all or nothing match in the final game of the group stages. Waterford IT marches on while CIT will put it down as a day to forget.
