Report Cork IT:

CIT faced a tough opening game of their league campaign in the colleges A division on Wednesday 14/10/09. Collingwood Cup runners up UL were the visitors to CIT and it wasn’t long before the students from Limerick established themselves. Two quick fire goals left them 2 goals up after just 20 minutes. However, CIT battled back with midfielder Colin Kearney leading the fight back. They broke up plenty of UL attacks to send winger Brian Bell in behind the UL defence. Strikers James O’ Sullivan and Graham Cummins made the most of what little ball they got, directing one or two headers goalwards, but the UL keeper was not to be beaten. A sucker punch third goal from a set-piece really knocked the wind out of CIT and a fourth goal before the break all but ended hopes of a comeback.

Manager Ger Dobbs made two changes at half-time, bringing on Shane O’ Keefe and James Groarke. This helped tighten the game up and CIT kept pressing in search of a goal. Unfortunately they could not break down the stubborn UL defence and late on UL scored a fifth which goalkeeper Cian O’ Callaghan could do nothing about.

CIT will need to up their performances for the rest of the league campaign if they want to secure a qualification place for the knockout stages. But with arguably the strongest team of the group out of the way they have every chance of doing so.
