CIT were the visitors to the Mardyke Arena on Tuesday night to face hosts UCC. And the two Cork rivals played out a frantic, fast paced first half to the joy of the on looking crowd. A questionable free kick early in the first half led to the opening goal of the game. Stephen O’ Brien stood over the ball on the right hand side of the box and his curled effort was enough to beat goalkeeper Shane Harrington. CIT grafted after this and good work from midfielders Colin Kearney and Ken Murphy got CIT back into the game and soon after they levelled the game up. Ken Murphy released winger Sean Foley and his mazy run ended with him being upended inside the UCC penalty area. Ken Murphy made no mistake in converting from 12 yards. This did not phase the university students and after half an hour they re took the lead. A free kick from the left wing was floated in and target man Richard Ryan got his head on the end of it to leave the CIT goalkeeper with no chance. Moments later it was 3-1, some superb individual skill from Eoin Kilcommons saw him weave his way past two CIT defenders before smashing the ball home with a venomous left footed effort. UCC showed no mercy and kept pressing. They were rewarded for their efforts when the referee handed them a soft penalty with 10 minutes to go before the half. What looked like ball to hand was seen otherwise by the referee and Kilcommons made no mistake to give UCC a 4-1 advantage. If the game was not already over as a contest, Rob Waters made sure it was with seconds left before the interval. A low cross from the left saw him turn his man expertly in the box before clinically finishing his shot into the bottom corner.
CIT made two changes at half-time and this stemmed the tide as they kept UCC out in the second half. This was also due in part to goalkeeper Shane Harrington who made numerous one on one saves in the second period to keep the home team at bay. Robbie Waters saw more than one of his efforts parried by the CIT number one. There was one glimmer of hope for the students from Bishopstown late on. They were awarded their second penalty but Colin Kearney saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Eoin Kelly. Overall, UCC were worthy winners and can be happy with their performance.
