Hosts Magee College made it through to this afternoons Collingwood Cup Semi Finals with the help of a late equaliser in normal time and a then penalty shoot out win over Trinity College.
Darren Higgenbottom had give the home side a bright start hitting home a close range effort on 17 minutes.Trinity replied two minutes later when skipper Luke Guerin headed in an Evin O'Reilly corner. Then minutes before the break Fran Wilson got in behind the Magee back four to grab the lead for the Dublin side. Magee battled on throughout the second half but failed to make any impression until three minutes from time a deflected drive from Brendan Doherty crept past Trinity 'keeper Niall O'Carroll to send the tie into extra time. The hosts then had the better of the penalty shoot out that ended 3-2.
UCD also needed extra time a penalty shoot out to see them past UCC in their quarter final tie.Paul Corry fired the holders into a first half lead with a stinging drive from the edge of the box which they managed to hold onto until ten minutes from time when a mix up in the UCD goal allowed Aiden Menton in for the equaliser.
Last years beaten finalists NUI Galway caused something of a surprise by knocking out the fancied Uiversity of Limerick in a high scoring game that ended up with Galway playing out the final 20 minutes down two players with midfielders Ciaran Foley and Shane Brown both getting red cards within minutes of each other. Luckily at that stage Billy Cleary's side were in a strong position having been well ahead with two goals from Ger Cheevers and one apiece from Sean Murphy and Foley.UL who had managed a earlier Brian Cleary goal hit back and a Dave McGrath penalty plus a late Dan Clinton effort just was'nt enough to see them past the battling Tribesmen.
A Matt Rooney goal settled the Northern Derby when Jordanstown edged past old rivals Queens to make the semi finals for the second year in a row.
