30 January 2010
UCC were worthy winners in this year’s WSCAI Futsal National Finals beating UCD 1-0 at the superb indoor facilities in NUI Galway Saturday 30th January 2010.
The tournament was an exemplary exhibition of the highly skilled, fast paced futsal game. In the Cup Final, Alison Roche scored the winner for UCC in what was a tight affair against Premier League rivals UCD.
Despite having lost their first game in the tournament to hosts NUI Galway, UCC grew from strength to strength as the tournament progressed. Topping their group on goal difference, in the semi final they encountered a hotly tipped IT Carlow side in fine scoring form. At the final whistle the teams were in a scoreless deadlock and it took a save from UCC Keeper Megan Morris in sudden death penalties to secure their place in the final.
In the other Cup semi final draw, UCD were held scoreless by a resilient NUI Galway team. UCD secured their final position with a penalty from Rita Connaughton, displaying solid performances en route to the final they had every reason to feel confident that success was on the horizon.

The final looked to be heading to penalties with excellent goalkeeping from both UCD's Shona Hanlon and Morris between the posts for UCC. Roche’s powerful shot breaking the deadlock with 4 minutes remaining left little time for a UCD response. UCC successfully absorbed the final waves of UCD pressure to secure their first ever Futsal Cup Win.
UCC Co Captain Megan Morris was delighted with their progress "We were delighted with the win, we really came together as a team as the tournament went on"
UCD's Keelen Bring was named player of the tournament and Aine O' Gorman from IT Carlow was top scorer with five goals.
In the plate competition Trinity College beat NUI Maynooth on penalties after the game finished scoreless. Cheryl Kensley was the hero for Trinity saving two penalties and having an outstanding tournament, an excellent display of goalkeeping.
Over 70 players took part in the day long event having topped their respective groups in the preliminary regional rounds held in venues around the country. Eight Colleges and Universities participate in the event including UCC, Sligo IT, UCD, NUI Galway, CCFE (Cork), NUI Maynooth, Trinity and IT Carlow
